You might note several things on this video, the state of the pitch, the lack of decent refereeing!!, the fight in the crowd, some terrible defending on both sides.....who was Carlo Sartori? (55 games for Utd??), a missed penalty, was Northampton's first goal touched by the lad in the six yard box, offside? Best's embarrassment at scoring the record goal!
https://www.northamptonchron.co.uk/sport/football/looking-back-feature-it-was-50-years-ago-today-george-best-scored-six-goals-against-cobblers-1392257This was a drubbing of The Cobblers (NICKNAME DUE TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE LOCAL SHOE AND BOOT INDUSTRY) played on February 7th 1970, yes 50+ years ago, in an FA Cup 5th Round tie, at the County Ground. Ironically, when Northampton moved stadiums, they called their new one Sixfields...just a coincidence.
Ray Fairfax, a Cobblers full back, said that the closest he got to Best was when they shook hands at the end of the game.
Best, pictured above scoring with his head, had been banned from playing previously for four weeks having knocked the ball out of referee Jack Taylor's hands after a previous, 0-4 defeat against hot rivals Manchester City.
For other great footballing headlines....
