You might note several things on this video, the state of the pitch, the lack of decent refereeing!!, the fight in the crowd, some terrible defending on both sides.....who was Carlo Sartori? (55 games for Utd??), a missed penalty, was Northampton's first goal touched by the lad in the six yard box, offside? Best's embarrassment at scoring the record goal!

George Best heading the first goal of his double hat-trick
This was a drubbing of The Cobblers (NICKNAME DUE TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE LOCAL SHOE AND BOOT INDUSTRY) played on February 7th 1970, yes 50+ years ago, in an FA Cup 5th Round tie, at the County Ground. Ironically, when Northampton moved stadiums, they called their new one Sixfields...just a coincidence.
Ray Fairfax, a Cobblers full back, said that the closest he got to Best was when they shook hands at the end of the game.
Best, pictured above scoring with his head, had been banned from playing previously for four weeks having knocked the ball out of referee Jack Taylor's hands after a previous, 0-4 defeat against hot rivals Manchester City.

In this tie, Northampton scored 2 goals in the 2-8 defeat.
According to Northampton keeper Kim Book in a subsequent interview, Best's suspension meant that Northampton manager Dave Bowen had not scouted him and he was not mentioned in the team's pre-match preparations. Best, however, was both rested and eager to play, making sure that Northampton took notice.
As later described by the Daily Mirror, "Best destroyed them as completely as one man can destroy others without inflicting physical damage," noting that the six goals "came from the full range of his ability. A far-post header, a near-post header. A sprint, a touch and a shot that was a classic example of his devastating finishing." But the most memorable goal was his sixth--with United already up 7-1, Best dribbled straight at Book, then sent him sprawling with a little shoulder fake before slotting the ball into the open goal.
By the end of the match, even Northampton fans in the stadium were applauding Best's performance.

After beating Middlesbrough 2-1 in a Sixth Round replay, United were dumped out of the competition in the semi-finals by Leeds, who won 0-1 in a second replay, after two scoreless previous ties. Chelsea beat Leeds after three goes...0-0, 0-0, 0-1!

When Inverness Caledonian Thistle beat Celtic in a Scottish FA Cup tie.....today is also the anniversary of the headline;
The club first came to national prominence after their Scottish victories over Celtic in 2000 and 2003: winning 3–1 at Celtic Park resulting in the headline "Super Caley Go Ballistic Celtic Are Atrocious" in The Sun which is now framed in the foyer of Caledonian Stadium, and later in 1–0.
