BOBBY, DAVID AND PETER

On 7th July 1982 Ipswich Town manager Bobby Robson was appointed manager of England, replacing Ron Greenwood and in 1990, exactly 8 years after being appointed England manager Bobby Robson took charge of England for the last time. 


Also in 1990, hosts Italy beat England 2-1 in the World Cup 3rd/4th place match at Bari, which saw Peter Shilton make his record 125th and final appearance for his country. He is shown above with 3 other keepers! Almost half his international caps (61 out of 125) were earned after his 35th birthday. He holds the all time record for the most appearances in competitive football, 1390.

David Platt scored England's goal. Other team members: M.Stevens, Dorigo, Parker, Wright, Walker, McMahon (Webb), Beardsley, Lineker, Steven, sub: Waddle. Other nations in the England group were in "table" order the Netherlands result 0-0, Republic of Ireland (1-1 Lineker) and Egypt (1-0 Wright). In the Second Round, England beat Belgium 1-0 (Platt), then the Cameroon 3-2 in the Quarter-Final, Platt, Lineker 2 pens. In the Semi-Final v West Germany (1-1 Lineker) Lost on Penalties 3-4.

Another hero was Edson Arantes do Nascimento who arrived as a top class footballer when he played for his country on this day in 1957. He was just 16 years old and played and scored in a losing match against rivals Argentina (1-2), all happening three months before his 17th birthday.
