On this day in 1975, a German referee, Wolf-Dieter Ahlenfelder, became known for having a bit of an issue with the dreaded "booze", the likes of Paul Merson (bless him) and Paul McGrath (him too). Wolf took to the pitch he was due to officiate on, between Werder Bremen and Hannover 96, a little worse for wear. After 29 minutes, he blew his whistle for "half time" and those associated with the game knew there was something "amiss". His linesmen corrected himand the game continued.....after the game, he told the press "We are men-we don't drink Fanta!"
Steve Coppell wasn't a shrinking violet either and he loved a drink. He once said that he couldn't remember exactly why he liked Kevin Doyle after seeing him play in Ireland. He said he had "five pints of Guiness in the afternoon and all a bit blurry. Coppell left Palace in October 1996 to become manager of Manchester City, a job that he would quit after only six games and 33 days in charge. On November 8th in 1996, he quit his job, citing "stress and pressures of the job" as his reason for this shock decision, His reign at the club is the shortest of any City manager to date. His record at Palace.....
