Today in 1986, Liverpool, managed by Kenny Dalglish in his first season, capped a memorable year, by beating "local" rivals, Everton in the FA Cup Final 3-1. It was the first time that the final had been contested by two Merseyside teams (not too many others challenging that fact!). Liverpool had just pipped The Toffees to the League title and Alan Hansen admitted that he was very nervous about the game, because there was so much expected from his club! I think The Toffees were also expecting quite a lot!! Hansen had previously played in four European Cup Finals but this match challenged him the most, he said, as he wanted to do The Double, the third of the Century. Do you know which clubs achieved the other two? It was also the 5th at the time....same ????!!
No worries Alan! At Wembley on this day, Liverpool scored three (Rush 2 and Craig Johnston) and Lineker replied for Everton in front of 98,000. Liverpool team: Grobbelaar, Lawrenson, Beglin, Nicol, Whelan, Hansen, Dalglish, Johnston, Rush, Molby, McDonald.
