FIFA was "born" on this day in 1904. The Federation Internationale Football Association was founded in Paris with Belgium, Denmark, France, The Netherlands, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland being the founder members. FIFA now has 200 member nations which is more than the United Nations.
As well as seeing the Laws of the game being administered properly, FIFA's main job was to organise the World Cup. One of the traditions of participating countries in each tournament is the preparing and putting up with the usually terrible World Cup Anthem. New Order's "World in Motion" was released on this day in 1990. A few of the England Squad featured in the song presentation with Gazza backing vocals but John Barnes stole the show with his famous Barnsley Rap: "Catch me if you can/ Cos I'm the England Man/And what your're looking at/Is the Master Play," Word Barnesy. The England national football team's song for the 1990 FIFA World Cup was "World in Motion" by New Order. The song featured a rap by England footballer John Barnes and was New Order's only No. 1 single.
The song was originally titled "E for England" but the Football Association vetoed the name because it sounded suspiciously like a reference to the drug ecstasy! As if they knew....
