Gateshead (The Heed) has edged the five meetings between the two sides, picking up three wins in that period, while the Blues have won just once. The first meeting came in November 2022, when the Heed ran out as 3-1 winners at the Gateshead International Stadium. Heed players, Kamil Conteh, Adam Campbell, and Conor Carty, all found the net in the second half before Dan Mooney’s late consolation for Southend. However, in the return fixture, a 17-year-old Henry Sandat scored his first goal for the Shrimpers in a 1-0 win at Southend's Roots Hall.
The Blues salvaged a draw from the next trip to the North East, with Harry Cardwell cancelling out Stephen Wearne’s opening goal, but later fell to a 1-0 defeat in Essex after Marcus Dinanga scored in the second half.
The most recent fixture came in September 2024, with the Tynesiders running out as 3-1 winners once more. Gus Scott-Morris had levelled the game following Jacob Butterfield’s opener, but Luke Hannant and Ben Radcliffe both scored in the second period to ensure the Heed took all three points home with them.
More than 1,600 supporters will be making the 300-mile trip north, to the Gateshead International Stadium, representing Southend Utd with pride during the final push. The club is incredibly proud of its affiliation with Southend United Football Club, but the Community Foundation is about so much more than football. The Foundation, strives to engage with and enrich the lives of people of all ages, abilities, backgrounds and interests.
