1000 v 985

Joe Root batting at 65 n.o. went past his personal 6000 runs for England today in 69 matches. This game is played at Edgbaston against India, a test match which marks England's 1000th test match.

England have played 999 test matches so far and won 357, drawn 345 and lost 297. The first test match was against Australia at the MCG starting at 1.05 pm on March 15th 1877. England lost by 45 runs.

England's football team has played 985 international games (of various official kinds). The closest England international football match to March 15th 1877, was March 3rd 1877 against Scotland, at the Oval, losing 1-3.

Another closely dated "English" fixture includes an FA Cup tie on 10th Match 1877, when Oxford University beat Upton Park 1-0 in the Fourth Round. Oxford therefore qualified for the semi-final, in which they were given a BYE. Their traditional rivals, Cambridge University, lost to the Wanderers 1-0 in the semi-final.
The two universities never met in the FA Cup final (Cambridge never achieved final status). The Wanderers beat Oxford 2-1 in the 1877 final after extra time.

Old Carthusian, Edward Hagarty Parry captained Oxford and played in the final. He was also in the Old Carthusians 1881 final winning team.
Parry holds the ball.
