NOT THAT CHARLIE WILLIAMS

This Charlie Williams is a black comedian, who broke many cultural barriers in the post war period, on stage  and particularly in the footballing world. He appeared on The Comedians, The Golden Shot and his catch phrase "me ol' flower" suited a Yorkshire audience especially.

Being part of "Windrush", Williams arrived in England from Barbados and made his way to Royston in South Yorkshire, leaving school at 14 and working in the local Upton Colliery.
He signed up for Doncaster Rovers in 1948 and he played as a centre half, 171 games, scoring one goal, that against local rivals Barnsley at Oakwell on March 24th 1956. His career ended at Skegness Town.

Awarded the MBE in 1999 for services to Charity, he was voted "All time cult hero" by BBC viewers and in 1978 he died after suffering from Parkinson's.

C Williams.jpgThe Charlie Williams in the photo was born in Welling in November 1873 and lived until 1952. He was a goalkeeper who played for Phoenix and Erith in Kent, signing for the Royal Arsenal in 1891.
In 1893 he was part of the Woolwich Arsenal team that played their first Football League game against Newcastle Utd in September 1893.
In 1894 he was sold to Manchester City after 23 matches; City had just joined Division Two, finishing 10th that season, one place below Woolwich Arsenal.

In 1899 he won a Second Division winners' medal with City and in 1900 he became the first goalkeeper to score a top class goal in open play, following a long clearance against Sunderland at Roker Park on 14th April 1900.
Charlie then dabbled with Spurs, Norwich and Brentford until retiring from playing in 1908, 2-0. Captain of the England team was the very famous Vivian Woodward, the prolific centre forward at Spurs at the time.
He then  managed the Danish team that played in the London Olympics, losing the Gold Medal match to England.
In 1911 through to 1931 Charlie continued to manage in France and mainly in Brazil where his great great grand nephew, Seth Burkett,  ventured having been scouted when touring Brazil with Stamford Town FC-see yesterday's blog!
Hence the book.
