The lowest ranked club in the FA Cup, Alvechurch, comes from the 7th Tier and yesterday played Cheltenham Town in the First Round Proper and won 2-1. Cheltenham Town suffered one of the most humiliating results in their history, losing at home to the non-league club, in the first round of the FA Cup.
The hapless Robins trailed 2-0 to the lowest ranked club left in the competition, before wing-back Ryan Jackson pulled one back. But Wade Elliott's side could not find a leveller against their Southern League Premier Division Central opponents, who are four levels and 96 places below the Robins in the pyramid.
More than 1,400 travelling fans were able to celebrate a famous victory for the Worcestershire side, who had previously reached the third round in 1973/74. Alvechurch are curently members of the Southern League Premier Division Central and play at Lye Meadow, a ground that holds a capacity of 3,000. Even the return from injury of strikers Dan Nlundulu and Alfie May as substitutes could not inspire the Robins.
The 1971-2 season saw Alvechurch make FA Cup history; in the Fourth Qualfying Round, they were drawn against Oxford City. Following a 2–2 draw at home, the tie went to a record five replays; the first replay at Oxford City's ground was drawn 1–1. The second replay was at St Andrews in Birmingham, as any replays after the first were required to be on a neutral ground, and ended 0–0. The third and fourth replays (both at the Manor Ground in Oxford) also ended 0–0, before Alvechurch finally won the fifth replay 1–0 at Villa Park.
Four of the games also went to extra time. The six matches, which were played over 17 days during which Alvechurch also had a league match, remains a record for an FA Cup tie,
In 1991 the FA scrapped any matches beyond the first replay, which would now end with penalties to decide a winner. The win meant that Alvechurch reached the First Round Proper for the first time, also becoming the first club from the Midland Combination to do so. They went on to lose 4–2 at Aldershot.
Such is the beauty of the oldest Association Football Cup competition in the world. The Alvechurch club was established in 1929 as Alvechurch Juniors and started life in the Redditch League.
Other recent ties, Chippenham Town beat Lincoln City 1-0. Fellow sixth-tier outfits Farnborough and King’s Lynn also had surprise victories over League Two sides Sutton Utd and Doncaster Rovers.
