FA CUP TRIO AND NO 3 POINTS

Since a League Division 2 match in 1921, when Cardiff City beat Leeds United 1-0 in Division Two, the clubs have met 60 times in various League and Cup ties. Leeds have won 17 times and Cardiff 29 with 14 draws.

Their first Cup tie was on February 11th 1950, a Leeds' victory 3-1 in the 5th Rd.

Next came a remarkable sequence starting on January 7th 1956 in the FA Cup 3rd Rd, Leeds hosting Cardiff and losing 1-2.  Then on January 5th 1957, Leeds lost again 1-2 in the 3rd Rd at home. On January 4th 1958, Leeds United was dreading their FA Cup 3rd Round tie at home with Cardiff City. and quite rightly lost 1-2.

For three FA Cup seasons in a row - 1955/56, 1956/57 and 1957/58 - Leeds drew Cardiff at home in the Third Round of the FA Cup, and each time Cardiff won 1-2!!

Those results were part of a disastrous FA Cup run by Leeds. After beating Bradford PA in a Fourth Round tie on February 2nd 1952 they didn't manage another win in the competition until March 6th 1963 when they beat Stoke in the Third Round.

Another six years later on January 4th 1964, v Cardiff, Leeds won 0-1, in the Cup Fifth Rd. Stephen Charles says: "I was a 16 yr old watching this game and the Cardiff goalkeeper, one Bill Irwin made a save (from a Johnny Giles header I believe it was) which was very similar to the one Gordon Banks made against Pele." But it didnt stop the rout.

Then in 1972 (Feb 26th) Leeds won 0-2 FA Cup 5th Rd.

In 1975 FA Cup 3rd Rd, Leeds won 4-1 on January 4th and most recently

on January 6th 2002 Cardiff won 2-1 at Ninian Park 22,000 attended. LEEDS TEAM: Nigel MartynIan HarteRio FerdinandRobbie FowlerMark VidukaAlan SmithLee BowyerDavid BattyJonathan Woodgate, Garry Kelly, Danny Mills.

On the same date in 2005, Manchester United were playing Spurs in the Premier League at Old Trafford. At 0-0, United's Pedro Mendes saw Spurs' goalkeeper, Roy Carroll, off his line and Pedro fired an ambitious shot from near the half way line towards the United goal. Roy appeared to gather the ball, but "butter fingers" dropped it "over the goal line" and clawed it back into play in an attempt to save his reputation. Sadly for Roy, the ball was well over the line and everyone noticed, except referee, Mark Clattenburg and nearest linesman Rob Lewis. No goal was given, there was no VAR and Spurs were denied 3 pts and what would have been their first victory at Old Trafford since 1989!!

Former United goalkeeper Roy Carroll made a surprise return to action as he started for Ballinamallard in their NIFL Championship clash against Annagh on Monday.

The 45-year-old initially retired from football at the end of the 2020/21 season, having last featured for Irish Premiership side Dungannon Swifts. But Carroll was named in the Ballinamallard XI to take on Annagh in their Bank Holiday clash, 18 months after quitting the game. Watch that goal line!!!
