HAPPY NEW YEAR 1926

The first of January 1926 was certainly a case of 'Happy New Year' for Sheffield United,  although perhaps not for Cardiff City. Less than two years since those two clubs had met in only the third (ever) Wembley FA Cup Final, which United won 1-0. A few more goals were scored in the First Division match between the clubs at Sheffield's Bramall Lane.

On the same day, Bury beat Everton 1-0 at Gigg Lane. It was the first time that season, that Everton had failed to score a goal!

Sheffield United beat Cardiff City 11-2. It was - and still is - the highest score Sheffield United have recorded in the League and the most Cardiff have conceded in the competition.

For the first and only time in 1925/26, Sheffield United scored a century (actually 102) of League goals but they let in a few too, 82. Apart from the victory over the Welshmen Sheffield United defeated Burnley 6-1 and Manchester City 8-3 but they also lost 1-6 to Sunderland and 4-7 to Bury.
The Blades lost 3 at home and drew 3, drawing 12 away and losing 5.
Those were the days!
