The FA Cup is a 732-team tournament open to every eligible club in the entire English soccer system. 700 clubs have been eliminated so far — and just one non-league team remains: Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney's, Wrexham AFC of the 5th Tier, National League. The club, famously purchased by actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney in 2020, has fast become just about everyone's second favousite team. The engrossing TV series has loads of soccer fans pulling for them in their fight for promotion and FA Cup run.
Achieving the longest unbeaten run in any club's history is a remarkable feat: when that club is 159 years old, it's jaw-dropping. Manager, Phil Parkinson's side haven't lost in 22 games, and have won every single home game this season. averaging over 3.5 goals per game at The Racecourse, while conceding fewer than a goal a game.
They haven't faced opposition like Sheffield United yet though, a club a startling 13 points clear of third-placed Watford, The Blades are blazing a trail back up to the Premier League. Their defence is the best in the Championship, and they're unbeaten in 9 matches themselves. No team in the top 4 divisions has won more away games, or earned more away points. Only 2 teams in the top 5 tiers have bettered those figures: that'd be Notts County and us.
The Red Dragons host Sheffield United of the Championship, in the FA Cup Fourth Round, at the Racecourse Ground this Sunday (29th Jan 2022) at 16.30. It is shown live on BBC One, on Radio 5 and on ESPN TV.
The Racecourse Ground is going to have a very different look for tomorrow's FA Cup Fourth Round tie - around 8,000 tonnes of material have already been removed as part of the Kop Development!
The rising Welsh club has had its share of memorable moments in the past, including the shocking beating of Arsenal in the 1991 FA Cup.
Similarly, they’ll be looking to knock off a Sheffield United side who currently sit second in the English Championship (in an automatic promotion spot to the Premier League), 13 points clear of third.
Wrexham themselves are flying high, presently atop the National League table with promotion to League Two a top priority. Hence, it’s a place that would guarantee a return to the Football League if they can finish strong. Any supporter who wanted to buy Wrexham shirt will be disappointed, they are all sold; 8,000 of them. Many sent off to Canada and the USA, confirming the interest in the owners, the club and the "sport".
A new TV series based on the American owners and their club is scheduled for 2023, no doubt it will include this cup run. Phil Parkinson, is delighted! See below:
