Modern superstars misbehaving in their expensive supercars is hardly news. In January 2010, Chelsea's Ashley Cole received a 4-month driving ban plus a £1000 fine for being caught driving at 104mph in a 50mph zone in his £150,000 Lamborghini Gallardo. Despite earning an estimated £80,000 per week his solicitor asked for 21 days to pay his fine! We don't know how much he was fined.
In 1955, Duncan Edwards of Manchester United and England, regarded as the superstar of his generation before his tragic death at Munich in 1958, was caught by the police riding home on his bike without lights (it was dark). After playing in the local derby, against Manchester City, at Old Trafford in February 1955, he was fined five bob (25p) by the courts and two weeks wages by Manchester United for bringing theE clubn's name into disrepute.
This next offence may well be considered as illegal, but when Paul Gascoigne did it it was an hilarious joke. It seems at the 1990 World Cup Finals in Italy (we finished fourth in that one) Gazza would sit at his upstairs bedroom window at the team hotel and drop water and eggs onto the passers-by below. Extra points were given for hitting one of his team-mates.. Somehow I can't believe Bobby Moore or Alf Ramsey did that in 1966!
Travelling to Iceland for a European Championship qualifier in May 1990, the Albanian squad (below) were at Heathrow airport, waiting for a connecting flight. All 37 of the travelling Albanians - players, management, coaches and doctors where arrested, when it was found that they had helped themselves to thousands of pounds worth of items from the airport shops without paying. In their defence they claimed that they didn't get out much and thought duty-free meant all-free! They weren't charged but had a close police escort when they were finally returned to the airport to catch a later flight to Reykjavík; they lost 2-0 to Iceland.
