But at least he listened and got on with what he is good at! Whereas on this day in 2006, Steve McClaren started his reign as England international manager, arriving at the FA HQ, Soho Square. The Soho address might have been appropriate, bearing in mind what a dog's dinner poor Steve made of his national appointment. It was a quickie, the shortest tenure for an England manager. Poor Steve, such a nice guy, lasted 16 months and 18 matches before he was sent packing by the stiff "suits and ties" at Lancaster Gate. England had failed to qualify for Euro 2008.You will remember this sad pitch side moment.
Steve's playing career was:

He moved back to Derby County in 1995, where he was assistant manager to Jim Smith. The pair won promotion to the Premier League in their first season.
In early 1999, McClaren moved to Manchester Utd, as assistant to Alex Ferguson. His first half-season was distinguished by United winning the Treble, consisting of the Premier League title, FA Cup and UEFA Champions League. He developed his reputation, using modern methods, at the time, such as video analysis and psychology; a job that lasted a couple of seasons.
In October 2000, McClaren was appointed by The FA to the England coaching team, joining caretaker manager, Peter Taylor (remember him?).
