AUSTRALIA PLAY SWEDEN ON SATURDAY FOR 3rd PLACE
The History of Women's Football in Australia  began as early as 1903, in New South Wales, but the first public match of Association Football between two women's sides occurred when North Brisbane played and defeated South Brisbane 2-0, at the Brisbane Cricket Ground (now The Gabba) on September 24th 1921.

North Brisbane was known as The Reds and South Brisbane was The Blues; both kitted out in full football (soccer!) uniforms. Over 10,000 were in the crowd. But this did not last and Association Football had too many challenges for a long period, until the game was brought out of obscurity during the 1970s Football became more popular in Brisbane and there was a forming of the first ever Women's team known as La Trobe Ladies and eventually the formation of The Queensland Ladies Soccer Association. (the name had to distinguish from Aussie Rules!!) Another match took place in the October in Ipswich, attracting over 3,000 crowd and this time the teams played out a 2-2 draw.

Football in Australia can be traced back to the early 1900s with the formation of the "Commonwealth FA" on December 11th 1921. The first international matches were played in 1922 and the team toured England in 1925. Membership in FIFA happened in June 1956, but only lasted 5 years as ASFA was disbanded for "poaching overseas' players". In 1961 the Australian Soccer Federation was formed and outstanding "fines" paid. By 1966 Australia and New Zealand (also knocked back by  authorities), created the Oceania Football Federation (now Oceania Football Confederation)- Australia, NZ, Fiji, and Papua New Guinea. The Women's Soccer Association was created in 1974 and later was run by AWSA from 2003. The association ran the National League and the National side, later known as The Matildas. In January 2005 the A-League was founded and in August the Socceroos qualified for the first FIFA World Cup in 32 years.

By 2020 Football Australia was founded, having been a full member of ASEAN, The Australian Professional "Leagues" in Australia were established.
