FROM HODDLE TO SANTINI

In September 2003, with Glen Hoddle gone, Spurs were looking for a replacement and the club's "act first and think later" seemed to be their strategy. The club put up with David Pleat, nice man, as a caretaker boss for a whole season, during which bookmakers took bets on 85 different names who might be his replacement at White Hart Lane. Eventually, the Tottenham hierarchy landed Jacques Santini. Spurs'; fans believed they had landed their own North London, Arsene Wegner. After 13 very dull league matches, with a sum total of 6 goals scored, he was on his bike.

Jacques Jean Claude Santini (born 25 April 1952 ) is a French former professional footballer and manager. He played for Sainte Etienne during the 1970s, and reached the European Cup final with them in 1976. He has coached the France national team - winning the 2003 Confederation Cup and reaching the quarter-finals of Euro 2004 - and clubs including Lyon.

Santini took the managerial position at Tottenham Hotspur after Euro 2004. He surprisingly announced his resignation after just 13 games. Officially, Santini left England due to personal problems, but it was widely reported that a series of disagreements with then Sporting Director, Frank Arnesen led to his departure. Speaking in 2005, Santini said he quit partly because he felt agreements with the club were broken, but he admitted he "dug his own grave" by agreeing to join the club before the end of Euro 2004

He took the job of head coach of AJ Auxere in Lique 1 in 2005, but was sacked in 2006 due to his conflict with vice-president of Auxerre Guy Roux. On 23 June 2008, Santini was linked with the vacant  managerial position at Scottish Premier club, Hearts but he refused the offer.

On an earlier date...England played their first ever Summer tour in 1908 when they played Austria, then a major nation (as it it now, of course),. in the capital Vienna. This was England's first ever match outside the British Isles. It ended emphatically with a 6-1 victory (half time 0-0) for England with Chelsea pair, Jimmy Windridge and George Hilsdon each scoring 2.
