SWEDES AND PLUCKY DONS

With some serious "Global" football going on in Germany, I see Gary Lineker looking out at me from my newspaper, along with some of his colleagues and mates, who will carry out bringing the EURO2024 results to us, along with explanations and apologies (perhaps? hopefully not needed!).

Lineker's career ended on this day, June 17th, in 1992, marooned on 48 England international goals. He was ONE short of Sir Bobby Charlton's international tally....you should know who Bobby is! Lineker was substituted when playing Sweden, in the European Championships!! Topical or what? https://www.uefa.com/uefaeuro/match/5091--sweden-vs-england/

The England manager, the "hapless"?? Graham Taylor gambled on a tactical change which did not work and he was lambasted by the national (possibly Global) press when England could not take advantage of the tactical substitution bringing on the national newspaper headline in The SUN, which amusingly (for some) read "Swedes 2 Turnips 1", with a picture of Taylor's head on the photographed root vegetable. For Graham, it was the end of a career.

Taylor died suddenly and unexpectedly of a "suspected heart attack" on the morning of 12th January 2017.

On January 12th in 1976, lower down the football pyramid was Workington Town FC from Cumbria, who were voted out of the Football League (by the other clubs!!) following their second consecutive last place in the Football League. They were replaced by the ever entertaining, Wimbledon FC, who beat First Division, Burnley FC in the FA Cup that year and hardly looked back!
