THE GERMANS AGAIN AND PELE AGAIN

Having won the 1966 World Cup, at Wembley, England's national team was on a roll by the  time the1970 World Cup Finals were nearing! They played 12 matches in 1970 from January 14th at Wembley, drawing 0-0 with The Netherlands, beating Belgium away 1-3, Wales in Cardiff 1-1, N. Ireland at Wembley 3-1, Scotland at Hampden 0-0, two friendlies away against Colombia 4-0 and Ecuador 2-0, beginning the World Cup Group on June 2nd v Romania 1-0, Brazil 0-1 five days later, Czechoslovakia 1-0 on the 11th June, bowing out to West Germany (quarter-final) 2-3 aet on June 14th. Finishing with East Germany in a friendly at Wembley 3-1 in November.

They were co-favourites to retain the trophy (along with Brazil). But the 1970 World Cup WAS all about Brazil or perhaps just one man???

Pele, a Brazilian! Edson Arantes do Nascimento born 23 October 1940 – died 29 December 2022.

You know him! He was the outstanding player (in the World at the time) and I remember watching him and his colleagues bring a whole new type of football to our TV screens. There was Pele's attempt at goal from inside his own half, against Czechoslovakia,

Carlos Alberto's incredible shot in Brazil's "rout" of Italy in the Final, Jairzinho's shot following Pele's subtle set up.

The World Cup was all about Pele, following on from his disasterous 1966 World Cup performance......you might like to read up on what happenednext.
