On November 10th, 1997 England visited Rome, to play Italy in a "1998 World Cup qualifier".
England were top of the European Group 2 and this was the final game. The Three Lions needed just one point to achieve automatic qualification for the 1998 World Cup. They did what they needed to do and battled out a 0-0 draw with Paul Ince suffering a bad head injury.
"But then one night in Ro-ome, we were strong, we had grown". so sang Baddiel and Skinner in their version of "Three Lions", referring to the match, played on this day, which England had to win, away, to have the honour of attending the World Cup Finals.
Paul Gascoigne played superbly and Paul Ince did a "Terry Butcher" impression, playing with a cut head, bandaged skull and bloodstained shirt, which would not be allowed today! England miraculously, held on for the point they needed and thus, qualification.
