WOR JACKIE

October 5th 1946

After a £13,000 move from Bradford Park Avenue to Newcastle United Len Shackleton made his debut for the Magpies in a Division 2 match against Newport County on 5th October 1946 in front of a St James' Park crowd of 52,137. Newcastle proceeded to equal the highest score in Football League history with a 13-0 victory with new-boy Shackleton scoring six of them. A perfect debut or what!

John Edward Thompson "Jackie" Milburn (11 May 1924 – 9 October 1988) was an English footballer, principally associated with Newcastle United and England, though he also spent four seasons at Linfield. He was also known as Wor Jackie (particularly in North East accent!).

Cousin to the mother of Jack and Bobby Charlton, Milburn played two trial matches at St James' Park, as a 19-year-old in 1943. In the second of these, he scored six second half goals. Milburn made his competitive debut in the FA Cup in the 1945–46 season and was initially deployed on the left wing as a supplier to Charlie Wayman. However, Wayman was dropped before a 4–0 defeat to eventual winners Charlton Athletic in a 1947 FA Cup semi-final and when he afterwards vowed not to play for United again, manager George Martin made the decision to switch Milburn to cengtre forward. In his next match, on 18 October 1947, Milburn wore the number nine shirt for the first time and scored a hat-trick.

Milburn's subsequent achievements, particularly his two goals which won the 1951 FA Cup Final and his 45-second opener in the 1955 FA Cup Final which was the fastest ever Wembley FA Cup Final goal until it was beaten by Roberto di Matteo in 1997, brought him national recognition and afforded him iconic status on Tyneside. In total, Milburn played in three FA Cup winning finals for United; 1951, 1952 and 1955. Despite his achievements, Milburn was reportedly a very shy and self-deprecating individual, whose modesty further endeared him to Newcastle United supporters, though according to Tom Finney, this stemmed from an "innate inferiority complex".

By the time Milburn left Newcastle in 1957, he had become the highest goalscorer in Newcastle United's history. He remained so until he was surpassed by Alan Shearer in February 2006. Milburn remains Newcastle's second highest goalscorer, having scored 200 competitive goals. Milburn's transfer to Linfield in 1957 was almost jeopardised when the Newcastle board demanded a substantial signing fee, and much to the anger of fans, Milburn was not immediately granted a testimonial. His signing for Linfield "added thousands to the gate" and he made 54 appearances, scoring 68 goals in four seasons in all competitions for the club. He was finally granted a testimonial ten years later, in 1967.

Milburn died of lung cancer on 9 October 1988, aged 64. His funeral took place on 13 October, and was attended by over 1,000 mourners at St Nicholas' Cathedral, in Newcastle. Tens of thousands of people lined the streets to watch the cortège pass. A statue of Milburn, costing £35,000 and paid for by donations received from Newcastle United supporters was erected on Newcastle's Northumberland Street before it was relocated in 1999 to St James' Boulevard and then moved again to its present position on Strawberry Place, just outside St James' Park.

Milburn was inducted into the English Football Hall of Fame in October 2006.

In 2009, Goal.com listed Milburn as 43rd in their list of the top English players of all time.

NEWCASTLE ON THE LOO AND A TW0-TWO

On 4th October 1997 in the Premier League match between Newcastle and Tottenham at St James' Park Spurs started the second half with a bit of a disadvantage - they were two players short! Les Ferdinand and Ruel Fox - both former Newcastle players - had lost track of the time and missed the kick off as they were still in the toilets! and in 2014, on the same day

Newcastle United fans thought of a novel way of protesting against their manager, Alan Pardew, on an away-day Premier League visit to Swansea City. They unveiled an apt banner  - 'Not a Welsh town, our form in 2014' - which detailed their poor playing form in 2014, mainly Ls and Ds. It proved to be an immediate hit with the media although a few newspapers did spend far too long listing all the Welsh towns that don't have a vowel in their name! For the record it was another D that day (2-2) while Pardew stayed in the job for another 3 months before deciding that a move to Crystal Palace would benefit his career.

IMMERSED IN GREECE

Football first appeared in Greece in 1894 and began to spread its interest after the 1896 Olympiad, when football was included in the games' programme. Many sports' clubs started to establish football divisions while the first purely (not associated with other sports) football clubs were also founded. In the first years, until 1912, the Championship was organised by the Hellenic Association (SEGAS). This Championship was actually a local tournament among clubs local to Athens and Piraeus, where the population was greatest.

The Super League Greece 1 or Stoiximan Super League for sponsorship reasons, is the highest professional association football league in Greece. The league was formed on 16 July 2006 and replaced Alpha Ethniki at the top of the country's senior league system. The members of the cooperative are the Football Limited Companies (P.A.E.) that have the right to participate in the Super League 1 championship. The president of Super League 1 is Vangelis Marinakis, who has been re-elected for the third time.

It consists of 14 teams and runs from August to May, with teams playing 26 games each followed by 6-game Championship play-offs to decide the champions.

As of May 2024, Super League Greece is ranked 15th in the UEFA Ranking of leagues, based on performances in European competitions over the last five years.

Since the foundation of the first official Panhellenic Championship in 1927, only six clubs have won the title. With 47 conquests, Olympiakos has the most titles in the history of the competition. (a team I have seen play live in Greece!)

Giorgios Giakoumakis scored 26 goals in the 2020–21 Eredivisie and then notched 13 goals in 2021–22 Scottish Premership. See tomorrow's edition on Gorgeous Giorgios.

The current champions are PAOK.

MAN AND LONG SPEAR-IN FOOTBALL?

The name of Tilikratis ("the man who holds a long spear") is related to Telycrates, a Greek admiral, who took part in the battle of Aegospotami. He fought in the side of Peloponnesian alliance. Today, the football club of Lefkada is named Tylikratis after him, since its foundation in 1925.

The first club in Lefkada was founded in 1925 by students of the school. The first 'Tilykratis' was the National Association of Physical Education, originally part of sports'; athletics, football and swimming taking full shape in 1928 with its first "trainer" in Santa Eustatius. Periodically, a number of other clubs formed. The colours in the badge, blue and red, represent the blue and red of Greece football. The "TL" on the badge means Tilykratis Lefkada, following the merging of the clubs in 1963.

The dictatorial regime of militarists in the country gave the club the name "Phoenix" Lefkada. In the early days of the junta, in 1974, the team took back its real name, Tilykratis. The  club's longest rivalry is with nearby Prevesa FC.

Lefkada is part of the Ionian Islands and being a smaller island than Corfu, any success against A.O. Kerkrya, creates understandable anxiety among their northern neighbours.
