EDSON ARANTES DO NASCIMENTO

Pele, born on this day in 1940, was the subject of an art exhibition in London at The Halcyon Gallery in London. This celebrated the 75th birthday of world famous Brazilian Footballer by staging a luscious display of art work associated with the great man.

Pele, probably, is the most famous footballer and his exploits between his World Cup debut in 1958 and his 1000th competitive goal, when playing for his home club, Santos, go down in folklore. Even then he continued to excite fans all over the world until he retired in 1977.


Edson Arantes do Nascimento, born 23 October 1940 – died 29 December 2022, was better known by his nickname Pelé. He was a Brazilian footballer. Widely regarded as one of the greatest players in the history of the sport, he was among the most successful and popular sports figures of the 20th century. The stamp commemorates his 1000th goal. In total, he scored 1,279 goals in 1,363 games, which included friendlies, and this is recognised as a Guiness World Record. 
In 1999, he was named Athlete of the Century by the International Olympic Committee and was included in the Time list of the 100 most important successful and popular person in the 20th Century
In 2000, Pelé was voted World Player of the Century by the International Federation of Football Federation and statistics (IFFHS) and was one of the two joint winners of the FIFA Player of the Century, 
alongside Diego Maradona.
Barnet Ronay, English journalist states, "What is certain is that Pelé invented this game, the idea of individual global sporting superstardom, and in a way that is unrepeatable now."
