MAN AND LONG SPEAR-IN FOOTBALL?

The name of Tilikratis ("the man who holds a long spear") is related to Telycrates, a Greek admiral, who took part in the battle of Aegospotami. He fought in the side of Peloponnesian alliance. Today, the football club of Lefkada is named Tylikratis after him, since its foundation in 1925.

The first club in Lefkada was founded in 1925 by students of the school. The first 'Tilykratis' was the National Association of Physical Education, originally part of sports'; athletics, football and swimming taking full shape in 1928 with its first "trainer" in Santa Eustatius. Periodically, a number of other clubs formed. The colours in the badge, blue and red, represent the blue and red of Greece football. The "TL" on the badge means Tilykratis Lefkada, following the merging of the clubs in 1963.

The dictatorial regime of militarists in the country gave the club the name "Phoenix" Lefkada. In the early days of the junta, in 1974, the team took back its real name, Tilykratis. The  club's longest rivalry is with nearby Prevesa FC.

Lefkada is part of the Ionian Islands and being a smaller island than Corfu, any success against A.O. Kerkrya, creates understandable anxiety among their northern neighbours.
