David Picken

Today, in Victoria, yes in Australia, and near Melbourne, I met author David Picken, born in England and a life long supporter of Port Vale FC, who had a stunning play off victory at Wembley in 2022 and presently play in the Football League One (third tier). We have been in touch over "Carthusian soccer history" for some time and we were able to meet up on a sunny morning. I will have mentioned Port Vale before in this Blog! Vale is an interesting club with an unusual history.

David, a player from schoolboy age to 45 years' maturity, he has played in a number of global locations, including England, Papua New Guinea, Saudi Arabia and he presently lives in Victoria, as an administrator for Surf Coast FC. He worked in construction, as a professional and also as an academic, in Hong Kong and at Deakin University in Australia, winning awards for his text books, academic papers and excellence in teaching. You should buy his publication about football called "Football Fans in their own write...", published by Fair Play Publishing in 2023. Photographs in the book include those of Ken Loach, Pope Francis, Keith Hackett, Sir Jonathan Van-Tam, Lord Blunkett, Sir Lindsay Hoyle and Joan Walley; varied and impressive stuff.

We enjoyed an hour or so together in a local cafe and shared our memories of the great game. If you enjoy football (soccer) books, then have a look at fairplaypublishing.co.au/shop (published in Sydney)

The proceeds will be donated to UNICEF and also by David.
