Bobby Moore was one of the great defenders and an Icon! On this day in 1966, following his World Cup showing for England, Moore's reputation took a bit of a hammering (get it?!) when his West Ham United defence was put to the sword by neighbours Chelsea, who put FIVE past the Hammers' defence. However, do not panic, as Moore's lot also notched 5 also, in an exciting League London Derby. Final score? Yes 5-5.
FIVE rings a bell with Michael Owen, who capped off his 2001 year with the presentation to him, on this day, of the Ballon d'Or award, as the European Footballer of the Year. This was the first time an Englishman had won this since Kevin Keegan in 1979, albeit, as a player for Hamburg! Owen's club, Liverpool, had won FIVE trophies that year and Michael, bless him, put a hat trick past the Germans, in England's memorable 5-1 win in Munich. I watched it on TV and wow!
The first trophy Liverpool secured in 2001, was on 25 February, with a 5-4 penalty shoot out, after a 1-1 draw with Birmingham City in the Worthington Cup Final. The game was also the first club fixture to be played at Cardiff's Millenium Stadium, while Wembley was being rebuilt.
Part two of the treble was completed on 12 May, when two late Owen goals overturned Arsenal's lead in the FA Cup Final, to give the Mersey Reds a 2–1 win. The final part of the treble was perhaps the most dramatic. The UEFA Cup Final featured an amazing nine goals, as Alaves gave Owen's lot run for their money, fighting back to equalize from 3–1 and 4–3, before Liverpool finally ran out 5-4 winners after extra-time.
The FA and UEFA Cup wins meant Liverpool played in the Charity Shield (winning 2-1 over Man U) at Cardiff and the European Super Cup (yes, they all count!), 3-2 over Bayern Munich, in Monaco, at the start of the next season, winning both.
Watched by a crowd of 13,824, Liverpool took the lead in the first half when John Arne Riise scored. Liverpool extended their lead before half-time when Emile Heskey scored. Liverpool scored immediately after the start of the second half to lead the match 3–0 after Michael Owen scored. Salihamidzic and Jancker, then responded, scoring in the second half, but Liverpool held out until the end of the match to win 3–2, their second Super Cup win.
