BEST HEADLINE 50 YEARS AGO
George Best played over 360 games for United, scoring 137 goals. His career stretching all over the world amounted to 586 games and over 200 goals. Mind you some of those were for Tobermore United and Nuneaton Borough! SIX goals came here in a game played 50 years ago today.
You might note several things here, the state of the pitch, the lack of decent refereeing, the fight in the crowd, some terrible defending on both sides.....who was Carlo Sartori? (55 games for Utd), a missed penalty, was Northampton's first goal touched by the lad in the six yard box, offside? Best's embarrassment at scoring the record goal!

This was a drubbing of the Cobblers on February 7th 1970, yes 50 years ago, in an FA Cup 5th Round tie at the County Ground. Ironically, when Northampton moved stadiums they called their new one Sixfields...just a coincidence.
Ray Fairfax, a Cobblers full back, said that the closest he got to Best was when they shook hands at the end of the game.
Best, pictured above scoring with his head, had been banned previously for four weeks having knocked the ball out of referee Jack Taylor's hands after a 0-4 defeat against hot rivals City. Northampton scored 2 goals in the 2-8 defeat.
This is also the anniversary of
When Inverness Caledonian Thistle beat Celtic in a Scottish FA Cup tie.....BUT some say the headline was copied from a previous Liverpool v QPR game when "Super Calley (Ian Callaghan) Goes Ballistic, QPR Atrocious".
For other great footballing headlines....
