COCKNEY CUP FINAL

May 22nd 1982, FA Cup Final at Wembley Spurs (4th in Div 1), the holders, drew 1-1 with QPR from the Second Division, who had just landed 5th place in the division.
Not many clubs from below the top division had reached the final. Ten years earlier???

An embarrassing result for Spurs in the "Cockney Cup Final" until the replay! BIT far out from the sound of Bow Bells for Cockneys, eh??
This was only the third Cup Final replay in history, at the time and 5 days later (27th) Spurs got into gear and thumped QPR 1-0 with a 6' penalty!

Only two pens in normal play have been "missed" in FA Cup Finals:
Charlie Wallace (below) of Aston Villa missed his penalty kick in 1913, but his team won the cup v Sunderland 1-0 at The Crystal Palace. Charlie provided the assist for the winning goal in the 100th minute.
He also won a cup winners' medal in 1920 when Aston Villa beat Huddersfield 1-0 after extra time at Stamford Bridge. Charlie ended up as a painter and decorator but kept in touch with Villa as a coach, scout, dressing room attendant and steward.

22 players in the final were English except for Sandy Mutch (a Scot) in Town's goal.

Below.....Dave Beasant, of Wimbledon's, penalty save in 1988 v Liverpool, was the first missed pen at Wembley.
Spurs Nostalgia on Twitter: "Glenn Hoddle scores from the penalty ...
So, not a big win for Spurs and not surprising, if you look at their results through the competition....
3rd April         Semi-Final v Leicester City at Villa Park 2-0
6th March       6th Rd away v Chelsea 2-3
13th February 5th Rd home to Aston Villa 1-0
23rd January   4th Rd home to Leeds Utd 1-0
2nd January    3rd Rd home to Arsenal 1-0

10 goals in six ties to win the FA Cup. Spurs secret? Only conceding 3 (2 in one game)

Spurs then equalled Aston Villa's wins in finals, seven and unbeaten in all their finals.
Argentinian, Ricky Villa did not play due to the Falklands War.

QPR's route to the final was:
R3 Middlesbrough 1-1 and then 2-3 away
R4 Blackpool 0-0 then 5-1 at home
R5 Grimsby Town 3-1 at home
R6 Crystal Palace 1-0 at home
SF WBA 1-0 at Highbury

Spurs team: for both games: Clemence, Hughton, Miller, Price, Hazard, Perryman (c), Archibald, Galvin, Hoddle, Crooks, then Brooke-sub for Hazard,
Manager: Keith Burkinshaw.
QPR: Hucker, Fenwick, Gillard, Waddock, Hazell, Roeder (c), Currie, Flanagan, Allen then "sub" Micklethwaite in replay, Stainrod, Gregory. Sub: Burke in second game.
