Well there we are, did we all miss this in our Christmas stockings??...where's my 2020 Calendar?
This is May 13th 1957 news, I'm afraid..
This is Marilyn Monroe, the glamorous film star of the post war period...there were others of course, but I suspect that only a few of readers will be ancient enough to remember this lovely ladies and if readers are ancient they will have forgotten about her anyway. A few well known film stars and politicians may have known her better than others. She was best known as married to American playwright, Arthur Miller and before having been married to Joe di Maggio, a Yankees' Baseball star.
The film clip, above, shows Marilyn as she kicks off at a match at Ebbetts Field, home of the Dodgers, in 1957 and the Daily Mirror snapped this "kick off" between the Israeli team, Hapoel FC, and an American Soccer League team in Brooklyn. This event created a watershed in publicity, which led to more sporting pages being adorned with "pin-ups". Hapoel won 6-4 and she had to kick off THREE times to get the photos right...
Gradually the tabloids were becoming popular with the "working class". If you watch the film clip, notice that she left the field with a limp....not everyone did though!!! |
OK, so this wasn't played out on May 15th, but would you prefer to read about The Spurs winning a European Cup Winners' Cup or the Wimbledon (The Crazy Gang) v Liverpool (The Culture Club), FA Cup Final OR Neil Franklin and George Mountford playing their first games in Bogota in 1950????
