The 5th of the 5th 1973, at Wembley with the statutory crowd attendance of 100,000, Leeds United, very much in their prime, were put to one side by an Ian Porterfield goal for AFC Sunderland, in an FA Cup Final that marked the 50th anniversary of the "White Horse Final" at the first final staged at the brand new Wembley.
From dishwater to Champagne, the Sunderland team surprised everybody, probably themselves also, as they performed a miracle. Leeds had finished in the top four of the major division nne seasons running. They were the cup holders, having beaten a tougher opposition, Arsenal the previous season, granted only 1-0 with a sniffer Clarke winner.
It was their third final in four seasons, achieving that with a squad full of internationals. Sunderland, at the other end of the spectrum, were Second Division "fodder", who had been at the relegation end of the division at Christmas. After half an hour, Ian Porterfield scored the unlikely winner (his first of the tournament) and despite throwing everything at the Sunderland defence , Jim Montgomery was superb behind a team of men hardly known outside of Roker Park.
Sunderland held firm and became the first Second Division club to win the club since West Bromwich Albion beat rivals Birmingham City in 1931.
The documentary about Don Revie's Leeds United tells it all; despite being successful, they were unliked by the majority of the footballing fraternity, a club that stretched the laws of the game and the goodwill of others to twanging point. Leeds never fulfilled their potential.
The Sunderland side? Montgomery, Malone, Guthrie, Horswill, Watson, Pitt, Kerr, Hughes, Halom, Porterfield and Tueart.
