VIOLLET AND THE QUEEN

Dennis Viollet was one of the lucky ones, surviving the Munich Air Crash that destroyed the "Busby Babes", Manchester United's emerging youthful squad, flying home from a European game in Germany.

Viollet went on to score 178 goals for the Old Trafford Club, forming a prolific partnership with the fabulous Tommy Taylor. In ten years at the club from 1952, Viollet appeared 291 times and won surprisingly only 2 England caps. On this day Dennis died from a brain tumour aged 65.

Bobby Charlton, another well known survivor, was knighted for his part in England's World Cup win in 1966. On this day in 2000, the Queen honoured the five "forgotten" members of the England team that played at Wembley on that famous day; Nobby Stiles, Alan Ball, Roger Hunt, Ray Wilson, George Cohen who all received MBSs at Buckingham Palace.
