CAN'T HOLD A CANDLE TO WICK

I came across a friendly, pre-season fixture over the weekend between Wick FC v Wick FC. Now I know about Wick, because it is a West Sussex village near Littlehampton. But playing themselves?

Yes, you know, it looks as though there is an annual pre-season fixture between Wick FC, Littlehampton and Wick FC, Bristol; the two clubs are 150 miles apart.

Here's a goal from the Wick, Sussex website!

Wick FC, Sussex was founded in 1892 and joined the West Sussex Football League, Junior section, in 1896, eventually merging with local Barnham FC in 2013-14.
Barnham, you railway buffs will know is a major junction on the London to Portsmouth railway. I've been there from time to time, late at night, having dropped off to sleep on a train journey home-missing my stop!
Like me and the train, we eventually parted company, and so Wick did with Barnham in 2015-16.

The Wick FC Sussex now plays at Coombsfield Way, in the Macron Southern Combination Football League Division 1 (Step 6), promoting from the Sussex County League and now runs a 1st team, an U21 and an U18 squad. They lost their first league game this season 1-4 to Mile Oak.

They recently played their Gloucestershire equals in a pre-season friendly.
The Sussex Wicks won 3-1.

The Gloucestershire/Bristol club, "name neighbours", Wick FC has a 1st team, Reserves, an A XI and Vets. No juniors of note.
The club was formed in 1971 and played first in the Bristol and District Senior League, now advanced to the Gloucestershire County League (Step 7) playing at Oldbury Lane. Wick FC, Owls, Bristol branch, badge!

Other "Wick" settlements are found in Worcestershire, in Wiltshire, 2 places, Dorset 1, and 1 in the Vale of Glamorgan and one in Caithness, Scotland. Wick refers to a place with artisanal activity and/or trade.
-wic is Anglo-Saxon for a fortified dwelling place or may be referred to a "bay" or brine spring or well.
