Oliver Reed. I was between school and uni. Today it is raining and Wimbledon is in full flow.
Do you know your Mexican geography? Apart from the obvious stuff about earthquakes, coral reefs, tourism, religious sites, natural vegetation..... most people assume Geography is all about places. Well it is too and so it should be.
Where is Leon? For some us, who are of a certain age, or who are just geeks about places, Leon is nicely located here (look carefully)...in the state of Guanajuato,,,population 1.1 million with a fame for leather goods. here are two maps to help you.
It was in the FIFA World Cup quarter-final for England, 4 years after winning the trophy in Wembley, beating West Germany, but this time....
England had been through the Group phase with only a defeat by Brazil which might have been considered an unlucky result for the English.
Against the Germans, 2-0 up with 21 minutes left, Alan Mullery and Martn Peters scored. Mullery (Nobby Stiles' replacement) then missed a sitter (would Nobby have been that far forward?).
Then "stand in" goalkeeper, Peter Bonetti, a perfectly good replacement for the unwell Gordon Banks, let in a duffer from Beckenbauer (who else) (why didn't Alf pin him down with Nobby Stiles? No Stiles in squad!!).....game on.
Uve Seeler then back headed a loopy goal with 8 minutes left. Germany swaggered and England were knacked going into Extra-time.
Bobby Charlton is substituted, ending his England career-106 caps.
Gerd Muller, "Der Bomber" took his one chance having had a quiet game...England were out.
Bonetti never played for England again,
A General Election in Britain a few weeks later was lost by Labour! Many blame the mood of the nation.
England 2 West Germany 3.
WG went on to play in a classic semi-final v Italy. Germans lost 3-4. Brazil beat Uruguay 3-1 and then Italy in the Final 4-1. West Germany beat Uruguay for third place 1-0.
England team: Bonetti, K Newton, Cooper, Mullery, Labone, Moore, F Lee,Ball, R Charlton, Hurst, Peters. Name the others!!
Team Mascot, Winston, a 10 month old Bulldog, was not allowed tickets by the Cup committee.
Bobby Charlton was the first non-Mexican to be awarded the State of Jalisco's Sportsman of the Year, for his "sportmanship" something his country should be proud of.
England players were warned to conserve energy as the higher altitude venues and not to chase aftet the ball when it went out of play.
Alf and his back room team had made available salt tablets, a South African potion to harden the skin against sunburn, suntan lotion, refreshing drinks in personal thermos flasks costing £9 each expensive in this days. No stone left unturned.
And there was the mystery of Bobby Moore in Bogota and the valuable bracelet. A scam apparently which has cost other "celebraties" money to clear their name.
