THE TRIBE HAS LOST ITS HEAD (REVIE??)-OBSERVER-JUNE 5th 1977

The biannual trip south for the Scots on May 4th, to play the Auld Enemy at the new Wembley in 1924 had always been a passionate affair. Bagpipes, whiskey, kilts (no dirks) added to the occasion; the oldest international.
During the 1960s over zealous supporters began to make their mark and the visit to Wembley Way had begun days before the actual game. With Trevor Brooking and Kevin keegan not playing, the England team was not at full strength and actually they had lost two games during the season already to the Netherlands, away 0-2 and to Wales.
They had beaten Luxembourg 5-0, in a World Cup Qualifier, then beaten N.Ireland in the Home international 2-1 and lost to Wales at Wembley 0-1, for the first time. Then came the Scots!
The Scottish midfield inspired by Danny McGrain tore the heart out of the England team. Goals from Gordon McQueen and Kenny Dalglish put the visitors in a solid position, An 87th minute penalty by Mick Channon gave the home crowd some hope, but I suspect many would have left for the tube stations by then. The 2-1 win for the Scots was their fifth triumph on English soil since 1938. Flareds ( see yesterday) invaded the pitch, sat on the cross bar as the English team slunk from the pitch and the Scots stayed and were hugged to "death". The cross bar broke! Today the gardens of many Scots will have turf growing that came from the Wembley pitch. 132 Scots were arrested for disorderly behaviour; £15,000 of damage was estimated and the cry was that the Scots should never be allowed back into the capital again.
Hugh McIlvanney, wrote in the Observer the following day (5th); "it was the tribe that lost its head". 98,103 witnessed it.

Managed by Ally MacLeod.
England, managed briefly by Don Revie, toured South America and drew 0-0 with Brazil. drew 1-1 v Argentina, drew 0-0 with Uruguay. Revie resigned over a few financial irregularities....
In September, Ron Greenwood took over the reins and managed a draw with Switzerland 0-0 in a friendly. In this match 6 Liverpool players and one "EX" Keegan played.
They then beat Luxembourg 2-0 and Italy at home 2-0 (Keegan and Brooking scored), both in World Cup Qualifiers but one way and another, failed to qualify for the finals for the second time...the Italians topped the group with 18 goals for and 4 against, while England only managed 15 for and 4 against....same number of points 10. The defeat to Italy in Rome in November 1976. This was the first ever competitive match between the two nations; the rest since May 1933 had been friendlies.
