50... yes FIFTY years ago

1970: 14th June. Where were the English? Sadly their last offering in the Mexican hosted FIFA World Cup Finals was in Leon against theWest Germans.....I think I have covered that embarrassment recently.

A week later, THE EQUINOX, on this day, the 21st June 1970, Brazil beat Italy 4-1 after a half time of 1-1, in the World Cup Final, iln Mexico City.

Italy had despatched West Germany 4-3, with 5 goals scored in extra time. The Germans, as always sneeked an extra time go, with an equaliser in "over time" after normal play. Schnellinger scored the equaliser as Italy were just about to celebrate getting to the World Cup Final for the first time since 1938. (what did the "War" do for them?).

This was Beckenbauer's dislocated shoulder match.
Muller of course scored 2.
The Italians' success was achieved through some favourites (anyone in the "retiring age group" will smart at these names): Boninsegna, Burgnich, Riva and Rivera. It had to be them!

Anyone else memorable in the German side?
Well Muller of course, Maier, Vogts, Seeler, Overath, Grabowski; just to name the familiars. I hate them!
Manager Helmut Schon said that their 2 hour battle with the English drained them and this led to their downfall. Ha ha gotch ya.

In the other semi-final Brazil put Uruguay to bed; they claimed that the Brazilians had "home" advantage playing in Guadalajara, but the officials took no notice. Pele was the difference again.

West Germany won the third place match v Uruguay, taking it seriously and playing a full side...

In the final then, Mazzola v Gerson controlled the game, especially in the second half...the winners of the final would hold the Jules Rimet trophy for permanent, having won it "too many times" previously.

Pele scored his country's 100th World Cup goal (a terrific header) and equalled Vava's record, who had scored in two World Cup Finals.

Jairzinho scored in every round of the tournament, when Pele refused to score himself but unselfishly headed down for his team mate (Jairzinho) to make history.....do you think he knew?

Mario Zagolo had won a winner's medal as a manager, as well as two as a player...........
Goal scorers:  Brazil: Pele, Gerson, Jairzinho, Carlos Alberta........... Italy: Boninsegna

In Brazil, the victory caused 44 deaths and 1800 injuries, from fireworks, falls, gunshots, traffic accidents...la, la, la,

England only lost 1-0 to them earlier in the 1/4s................and Pele had agreed with opposition "mate", Bobby Moore, as they swopped shirts, after the game ...Moore said,"see you at the Aztec Stadium (the final venue)!"...Pele replied "I think you will"
