REDS AND YELLOWS

  • Placido Galindo was the first player to be sent off in a 1930 World Cup (the first ever tournament) match, playing for Peru against Romania (1-3) on July 14th  in a match officiated by Alberto Warnken. 

  • Although physical red cards were introduced from 1970, they were not put in practice until the 1974 World Cup, when referee Dogan Babacan sent off. Chile's Carlos Caszley during a match against West Germany.
  • Two players have received red cards twice: Cameroon's Rigobert Song (1994 and 1998) and France's Zinedine Zidane(1998 and 2006).
  • Five dismissals have taken place during FinalsArgentina'sPedro Monzan and Gustazo Dezotti (both 1990), France's Marcel Desailly (1998) and Zinedine Zidane (2006), and John Heitinga of the Netherlands (2010).
  • Uruguay's Jose Batista received the quickest red card, in the first minute in a game against Scotland in 1986.
  • Leabdro Cufre of Argentina was sent off after the penalty shoot-out (making it the latest red card) and from the substitutes' bench in a 2006 quarter-final against Germany. Josip Simunic of Croatia was shown the red card after the final whistle of a 2006 match against Australia. Claudio Carniggia of Argentina was dismissed from the substitute's bench during a 2002 game against Sweden. These red cards did not reduce the number of players on the pitch during the match.
  • Three goalies have been sent off in the tournament: Italy's Gianluca Pagliuca (1994), South Africa's Itumeleng Khune (2010), and Wales's Wayne Hennessey (2022).
  • The match with the most dismissals was Portugal v Netherlands 206 when referee Valentin Ivanov dished out 4 red cards, 2 for each team.
  • The referee who has sent off the most players is Arturo Brizio Carter, 7 red cards in 5 different matches (also a record).
  • The team that has the greatest number of expulsed players is Brazil, with 11 – in 9 different matches, a record shared with Argentina. The team whose opponents have received the most red cards is Germany (incl. West Germany), with 20 – in 18 different matches, also a record.
  • The  2006 Cup had the highest amount of red cards: a total of 28 players were sent off (in 20 matches, also a record).

How many red cards have there been at the 2022 World Cup There have been two red cards at this World Cup, to date (5th-July). 

The first sending off in 2022 came from Wales when they lost 0-2 to Iran in Group B. Wayne Hennessey was shown a red card for clobbering Mehdi Taremi in the last 10 minutes of their second game. Vincent Aboubakar of Cameroon v Brazil, by referee Ismail Elfath (USA) in a 1-0 victory in the First Round, on Dec 2nd.

South Korea coach Paulo Bento - albeit not a player - was the first coach ever shown a red card at a World Cup after arguing with English ref Anthony Taylor for blowing the full-time whistle before his side could take a corner.  In World Cup History
