SCORE AND SAUL AND CECIL

December 4th 1909 In the First Division (in those days the top division) match at Anfield between Liverpool and League champions, Newcastle United, the visitors took the lead in the first minute and by the half time whistle, Newcastle led 2-5. But an amazing fight-back in the second half saw Liverpool finish as 6-5 victors, which helped them finish as runners-up in the division. Clubs in the top division that season included; Aston Villa champions, Woolwich Arsenal 18th/20), Bristol City (16th), Bury (13th), The Wednesday (11th) and Bradford City(7th). Relegated were Chelsea, 2 pts adrift of safety and Bolton W, 5 points adrift.

First Division Champions were, Aston Villa 53 points. Liverpool-runners up with 48pts. Blackburn Rovers 3rd with 45 pts but a better goal average (in those days), Newcastle Utd came 4th with 45 pts and won their first FA Cup. Man Utd came 5th withm 45 pts. In those days 2 points for a win; 1 for a draw.

Having started at Canvey Island FC, Frank Saul signed for Spurs in 1960 and was one of 17 players used by the club in the Double winning side of 1960-1. Saul scored in the 1967 FA Cup Final against Chelsea. He was involved in a player swap with Southampton, for Martin Chivers in 1968. Saul joined QPR in 1970 and played 43 league games scoring 4 goals before moving to Millwall in 1972.After quitting football, Saul worked as a builder in Essex and is 79 years old.
In 1965, December 4th, Tottenham's, Saul (above), was given his marching orders on playing in the First Division (top div) against Burnley at theirs, Turf Moor. Nothing too noteworthy??
He became the first Spurs' player to be sent off in a League Match since Cecil Poynton, in October 1928.
