LEN'S PEN ENDS BLUEBIRDS' DREAM

On Saturday 3rd May 1924 Cardiff missed out from being the first team to win the First Division Championship, which in those days was the top of the pyramid (ie before Premier League and so on).

Founded in 1899, they joined the Football League Second Division in 1920-1 and quickly won promotion behind Birmingham City on goal average and having achieved a semi-final defeat in the FA Cup.

Prior to the final weekend of the 1923-4 season, Cardiff led Herbert Chapman's, Huddersfield Town, by one point and Huddersfield beat Nottingham Forest 3-0 on that last day of the season. Cardiff only drew with Birmingham City 0-0 as the Welsh club's Len Davies missed a penalty. So both teams had 57 points.
The ruling was there were 2 points for a win, one for a draw and goal average counted; that meant dividing goals conceded into the goals scored total for each club.
Under present rules Cardiff would have won on goal difference and then goals scored. As it stood, Cardiff lost the title by 3/100ths of a goal (1.82 v 1.79).

Previously Huddersfield had beaten Cardiff at Leeds road 2-0 and draw away 0-0. They held 1st place in the division for 27 weeks of the 42 week season.

Len Davies was born in Splott, Cardiff. Not so good from the penalty "splot" then Len? He is the club's top goalscorer with 179 goals in 306 games.
Cardiff were Cup Finalists in 1925 losing to Sheffield United 1-0 and eventually FA Cup winners and Charity Shield Winners in 1927. Below is Cardiff winning the 1927 FA Cup and Len's shirt!

Third in the division that season were Sunderland and 4th Bolton.
Relegated were Chelsea with 32 pts and Middlesbrough bottom  with 22.

Andy Wilson moved from Middlesbrough to Chelsea in November that season and remained Middlesbrough's leading goalscorer with 8 goals, 5 of which came in a 5-2 win over Nottingham Forest.
At Chelsea, he was also top goalscorer with 5 in 19 matches not helping Chelsea much because both clubs were relegated and he too!!
