https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2G_q2aB5G6o BOTH these links will give you the Gordon Banks save in the 1970. It is worth seeing both which give slightly different angles on the Jairzinho "cross", the Pele "header" and of course the Banks' "save",
Gordon Banks made that "greatest save ever"........ well for him, or maybe for England or maybe against Brazil, or in thwarting Pele, OR, well you get my drift. This was on June 7th 1970, as the World Cup holders, England (hard to imagine isn't it), lost 0-1 to the Brazilians in the World Cup First Round group tie in the Jalisco Stadium Guadalajara. 66,756 watched this heroic act, in blistering temperatures at NOON.
England came second in the group above Romania (omen?) whom they beat 1-0 from Geoff Hurst's goal and Czechoslovakia, a 1-0 win from Alan Clarke. Brazil of course won 3 out of 3 with GD 8-3. England 4 pts GD 2-1! England at the time had played against Brazil more times in the World Cup than any other nation.WORLD CUP:11/6/58 0-0, 10/6/62 1-3, 7/6/70 0-1, 21/6/02 1-2
ALL TIME: England won 4, Brazil 11, Drawn 11 Most recent on 14th November 2017 at Wembley a Friendly 0-0.
Romania had been present at the first three World Cups from 1930 but had not won a game since 1930. England started the game with 6 of the 1966 Final (Banks, Newton, Labone, Moore, Cooper, Mullery, Ball, Charlton R, Lee, Peters, Hurst). Hurst scored after 65 mins and this made 5 goals in his previous four World Cup games....including an important few in 1966. A week later England played West Germany in the Quarter-finals.
