ST HELENA ISLAND FOOTBALL

The Island of Saint Helena (where Napolean was isolated) football team made its international debut in June 2019 when participating in the 2019 Inter Island Games. The games were played on Anglesey, North Wales because the original venue, Gibraltar, couldn't host the number of games. The country is not affiliated to FIFA.

Previously, St. Helena FA had played one fixture in 1949 against an English side, away, at Lockheed Leamington FC. (from Leamington Spa, Warwickshire). The Friday 18 November 1949 issue of the "Leamington Courier" notes 'Lockheed beat St. Helena 15-3, the visiting team coming from the island of St. Helena'. The sponsors of the games were Anglesey based Huws Grays builders merchants! Serious stuff ££££.

The next recorded match is one against Holyhead Hotspur Reserves, on June 10th 2019 with a win for the Islanders 2-0. The crest shows the St Helena plover (the wirebird) with a motto of "Loyal and Unshakeable".

Further results in 2019 included a loss to Ynys Mons, Anglesey 2-7, on June 12th, a defeat to the Shetland Islands on June 16th 1-6, a 0-9 defeat by Guernsey on the 18th and two days later a 1-2 loss to the "Western Isles".
