England v The Auld Enemy (Scotland); first played on 30th November 1872 at the West of Scotland Cricket Ground, Glasgow, ending in a 0-0 draw! The entire Scottish team was made up from Queen's Park players and England had three Oxford University players, one from Cambridge Uni and several from other amateur clubs and a WJ Maynard from the 1st Surrey Rifles. CW Alcock of the FA was an umpire (referee) and Queen's Park provided the other...the Referee or timekeeper, was W.Keay of Queen's Park, to whom the linesmen, both from Queen's Park, "referred" if they were unsure of a decision. Seems fair. This arrangement of officiating changed in 1891 when the present system was established.
The two countries have played out the following results: England won 48, drawn 25 Scotland won 41.
England's first defeat was on March 7th 1874, losing 1-2 away. The Scots ruled the roost during the early seasons with a draw in 1875, 2-2, three wins between 1876-1878, a win for England 5-4 in 1879 and then 1880-4, there were 5 defeats, including a couple of high scoring defeats 6-1, 5-1.
In 1885 and 86 there were two draws, then two more wins for the Scots in 1887 and 1889.
From 1921-6, there were 2 draws and 4 wins for the Scots. Between 1921-38 the Scots won 11 and drew 3; England 4. This programme dated April 1939, England won 0-1 away.
In April 1950, England beat Scotland 1-0, away, in a FIFA World Cup qualifying group. They both qualified for the Brazilian hosted tournament, but Scotland withdrew along with other nations. It was the first World Cup after the war, travelling put some off, Austria reckoned their team was "too inexperienced", India also didn't fancy the journey and nor did the French....unsurprising.
There were three consecutive victories for Scotland from 1962-4. England has only lost once since 1986, winning 8 and drawing 2. Losing 0-1 in November 1999 in the European Championships.
The last fixture played was on June 10th 2017 in the World Cup second leg at Wembley, with a 2-2 to three goals being scored in the last three minutes Harry Kane salvaging the draw. Prior to this England had won 3-0 in the first leg. Oxlade-Chamberline scored after 70m, Leigh-Griffiths then scored 2 at 87m and 90m and Kane nipped one back on 90 mins too.
The Scots have Jack Hendry playing at KV Oostende, 13 in the English Leagues and the rest in Scotland. Odds to win the tournament-200-1 Rank 44.
England ranked 4th Odds 7-1 have 23 playing in the Premier League, 1 at Athletico Madrid, 2 at Borussia Dortmund.
