The decision to hold the final in Europe for the second year running caused Uruguay and Argentina to travel. Uruguay were the holders and they refused to sail. The Spanish didn't turn up either as a result of their Civil War.
On this day (12th June) in 1938, the third tournament, in a brutal match, Brazil met Czechoslovakia in Bordeaux with 3 dismissed and 2 broken bones for the Czechs. The game ended 1-1 aet and this was the last time a game went to replay in the Finals. Brazil won 2-1 two days later in the Parc Lescure in Bordeaux.

France as hosts and Italy as holders did not have to qualify. The title holders idea was stopped in 2002.
14 places were available and only 3 non European teams took part (Dutch East Indies, Brazil and Cuba).

Austria qualified but due to the Anschluss (when Austria merged with Germany) some of the Austrian players joined German team, but not Matthias Sindelar, the Austrian star player. A unified Germany did not play again until 1994.

Hungary beat the Dutch East Indies 6-0 in their one game (the round of 16). Germany was beaten by Switzerland after a draw. Italy beat Hungary  4-2and Brazil came 3rd over Sweden.
Cuba lost 8-0 to Sweden in the quarter-final (the round of 8).
