June 16th 1982 saw Bryan Robson stun England's World Cup opposition France with a 27 seconds goal and then proceeded to reach the next phase unbeaten the first time achieved 100% record in the "first round".

In phase two, we couldn't score and didn't concede against West Germany and Spain, but went out before the semi-finals, remaining unbeaten.
Algeria on the other hand played their first round matches and beat West Germany 2-1 having gone ahead after 53 minutes and then took the lead again after Rummenigge equalised. Belloumi had the honour of scoring with 20 minutes to go and the Algerians held out.
Algeria then lost to Austria in the next game, beat Chile 3-2 and all was looking good for the next phase. West Germany played Austria in the final game, after Algeria had finished their group matches. A 1-0 win for the Germans would let them through at Algeria's expense. Low and behold that's what happened and Algeria went home, knocked out on goal difference.
I mentioned Matthias Sindelar before and he was the Austrian born player who refused to play for Germany after the Nazi annexation of Austria. Goodness know what he would have thought about this chicanery.
Needless to say, FIFA learned from this that it was not a good idea to have group matches kicking off at different times, so this was changed.
Fastest goal in WC Finals history from the kick off.......
